Renewable Heat Incentive

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) provides regular tax free payments to people heating their homes using certain renewable technologies. The scheme is designed to reward households that move away from fossil fuels by paying them to generate heat from renewable technologies such as Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP), Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP), Solar Thermal, and Biomass. It applies to new installation and eligible installations that was installed after 15th July 2009. The scheme is open to homeowners, business owners, private landlords, registered social housing providers, third party owners of heating systems, and self-builders. RHI payments are made quarterly for seven years for domestic installations and 20 years for commercial installations. The amount of money received depends on the type of technology that you install.

The tariff is fixed at the date of installation and indexed linked to retain its real wealth value. Additional payments of £200 p/a can also be claimed if you chose to have an optional heat meter installed on a domestic system. Once the installation is complete you’ll require a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certificate, Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and Green Deal Assessment (GDA), all of which Matrix Energy Systems are qualified to provide. Renewable heating systems work better in a well-insulated property, therefore there is a requirement to have 250mm of loft insulation and cavity wall insulation where recommended in the GDA.
